Is Porn Addiction Real?

Written by Muneeb Rana · Medically reviewed by Safi Allah Khan · Last updated 24 October 2026

Quick answer: Is porn addiction real? Problematic porn use is real and can cause serious distress. 'Porn addiction' isn't a formal diagnosis, but the WHO's ICD-11 includes compulsive sexual behaviour disorder, which covers persistent, out-of-control sexual behaviour, including porn use, that causes significant distress or impairment. Researchers still debate whether to call it an addiction.

What ICD-11 says

ICD-11 lists compulsive sexual behaviour disorder (6C72) as an impulse control disorder: a persistent pattern of failing to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses, over six months or more, with marked distress or impairment (WHO; Kraus et al., 2018). Distress caused only by moral disapproval doesn't meet the criteria.

Is porn addiction real? Why 'addiction' is debated

Some studies show brain responses to sexual cues in people with compulsive use that resemble other addictions (Voon et al., 2014; Gola et al., 2017). Others argue the evidence is not strong enough and that 'compulsivity' fits better. The label matters less than whether your use is causing problems.

Moral incongruence

Many people feel 'addicted' because porn conflicts with their values, even if their use isn't frequent. Research calls this moral incongruence (Grubbs et al., 2019). It's a valid reason to change, and approaches focused on values and shame reduction can help.

Signs it's a problem for you

Repeated failed attempts to stop, using more than intended, neglecting sleep, work or people, and continuing despite harm. See signs of compulsive porn use or take the private self-check.

Getting help

A GP, therapist or counsellor can assess you. CBT and other therapies are used for compulsive sexual behaviour (Mayo Clinic). See porn addiction help.
